One of the most commonly questions I’ve got is how to create an Apple ID without adding a credit card. It could be that you want to create an Apple account for your child or you just do not have any intention for purchasing any apps or simply you do not want to give your credit card details to Apple.
Does not matter what the reason is, usually the complain is that Apple does not give you the option to skip the credit card information and the conclusion is that it’s not possible to create an Apple ID without a credit card. It is possible, however, it’s not quite that straight forward as we might expect. In fact, it’s possible both on iOS (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) and on a Mac as well. We’ll show you both ways today.
Usually people try to create an Apple ID directly from Apple’s website or trough App Store by clicking on Store and than selecting the Create Account… option. But that’s not the way to do it! You will not be able to skip the credit card details this way. I know, it’s the obvious way to do it, but not the way to do it without a credit card.
Create Apple ID without credit card on a Mac
1. Select a free app from the App Store
Open App Store on your Mac (or Windows for that matter) and select a free app to download without being signed in. It does not matter what app it is, as long as it’s free. Of course for a paid app you’ll be asked for the credit card details. Now click on Install App. As an example I’ve selected an Unarchiver app.
2. Click the Create Apple ID now
You will be prompted to sign in with your Apple ID but you’ll have also the option to create an Apple ID. Now it’s the time to click that button. This is the only way you can co trough the process without being obliged to provide a credit card.
3. Set you account details
Add the requested information here but pay attention to the security questions! Second most common issue I see is that people is locked out from their account for various reasons and they just simply forgot the security questions. The rescue email comes in handy as well. I’d recommend to have set a rescue email and write down you security questions as well. If you are not doing this you put yourself to a high risk.
4. Set payment method
At this point the default option for credit card is None. From here you can easily finish the process and your new Apple ID can be given to your children without being worried that your bank account might be hit like a storm when this In-app purchases starts while your child is playing a game.
Create Apple ID without credit card on an iPhone
1. Download a free app
If your only Apple device is your iPhone, don’t worry you can create an account without a credit card from here as well. First, open the App Store without being logged in and select a free app to download. You will be prompted to sign in by using an existing Apple ID or create a new one. Tap on Create New Apple ID. Please not again, this is the only section from where you can create an Apple ID with the option of no credit card available. So this is the most important step.
2. Set account details and payment method
Set your account details but pay attention to the security questions (see point 3 from creating an Apple ID on a Mac). Once your account details are set you’ll be prompted to add the billing information and again, None is available to select from here. Follow the rest of the process and your account is ready.
